This Sunday (March 20) at 5:00 p.m., KSUT honors Women's History Month with Hearing Voices: Her Stories. Host Dmae Roberts presents stories by, of, and for women:
The Kitchen Sisters go to Tupperware parties. A supermarket checker checks out her life. Jenifir returns "Home From Africa" with all 13 Symptoms of Chronic Peace Corps Withdrawal. Host Dmae Roberts has a collage of and about "Sisters." In a new syntax of whispers and words Susan Stone tells the story of "Ruby" and her husbands. And Sonia Sanchez, Tracie Morris, Jill Battson and Meryn Cadell perform short poems.
Next Sunday (March 27), we'll present two half-hour Women's History Month documentaries on the KSUT Sunday Special.
At 5:00 p.m., it's Talking With The Wind: The Mystery of Opal Whiteley. It's the story of a young woman from Cottage Grove, Oregon. In 1920, she published a childhood diary about her time in the woods and her love of nature. It became wildly popular and then was later condemned as a hoax. This diary created an international controversy that led to her eventual decline in mental health.
And at 5:30 p.m., hear The Wasps: Women Pilots of WWII: In the early 1940s, the US Airforce faced a dilemma. Thousands of new airplanes were coming off assembly lines and needed to be delivered to military bases nationwide, yet most of America's pilots were overseas fighting the war. To solve the problem, the government launched an experimental program to train women pilots. They were known as the WASPs, the Women Airforce Service Pilots.
