KSUT Fall Programming Changes

We're expanding midday news programming and nighttime Music Blends, and adding new weekend music and information shows. Also, the Car Guys retire and Monday and Friday evenings are retooled.

KSUT is making changes to our programming schedule, effective Monday October 31, 2016.

The changes affect our daily, evening, weekend and overnight lineup. Some were made to reduce costs, and others were the result of listener feedback.

As always, the idea is to craft a programming schedule that stays true to our mission: to enrich, inspire, educate, and connect through exceptional programming.

We're excited to announce these changes, and to expand our mission to provide great public radio programming. The changes reflect listener feedback received by mail, email, phone calls, and during membership drives.

Programming changes details:

KSUT is adding the weekday news program Here & Now to the noon hour, Monday through Friday. Here & Now is a joint, live production of NPR and WBUR/Boston, along with a collaborating network of public radio stations nationwide. The program covers the rapidly changing world of news as it happens in the middle of the day. The format includes breaking and in-depth news, interviews, sound-rich features, and more. Here & Now is hosted by award-winning journalists Robin Young and Jeremy Hobson and is heard on 450 public radio stations across the country. World Cafe moves to a two-hour format Friday evening at 7:00.

The Friday Feature CD will become the Friday Feature Artist, and will air at 11:30 Friday morning. We'll play a half-dozen or so new and back-catalog songs from a featured artist. As always, you'll still have a chance to win lunch at Zia Taqueria for answering a trivia question about the artist.

KSUT is also proud to launch a late-night version of our popular Music Blend. It replaces the BBC World Service and some of our late-evening music programming. The Night Blend, as its called, features the same breadth and depth of music you expect from KSUT, but with limited interruption. It's the perfect late-night soundtrack to life in the Four Corners!

The changes mean that some long-time KSUT programs are going away. Perhaps the biggest of these is The Best of Car Talk. The show's producers have announced that it will cease production next year. Many of the remaining episodes and segments have aired several times. While we recognize that The Best of Car Talk continues to be popular with some KSUT listeners, we also hear from many others who are turned off by the repeats and the knowledge that one of the hosts is deceased. Meanwhile, our decision to drop the BBC World Service overnights will save KSUT almost $5,000 annually, and allow us to continue to develop new, original programming.

Evening changes:

Monday: We've created an all-encompassing World Music Night on Monday, starting with Fiona Ritchie's The Thistle & Shamrockat 7:00. It's now followed by Global Village from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00, which moves from Friday evenings. Earthsongs, which focuses on contemporary Native American music, joins the lineup at 10:00, and Alt.Latino follows at 11:00, moving from Friday nights. A Celtic Journey and Late Night 49ers are dropped.

Tuesday: no changes

Wednesday: The Grass is Bluer moves to 9:00. The Night Blend gets underway at 10:00. Sounds From the Mother Road moves to Thursday, and Folk Alley moves to Sunday (see below).

Thursday: The Ike's America Radio Program moves up an hour to 7:00, followed by Sounds From the Mother Road at 9:00, and The Night Blend at 10:00.

Friday: We've put together a New Music Night, featuring World Cafe at 7:00, Sound Opinions at 9:00, All Songs Considered at 10:00, and The Night Blend at 10:30. Global Village moves to Monday nights, and Afropop Worldwide and Garden of Delights are dropped.

Weekend changes:

Saturday: Radiolab moves to 11:00 a.m. from Sundays. The Colorado Playlist moves up to 7:00 p.m. The Night Blend gets rolling at 10:00. The Best of Car Talk is dropped. Sound Opinions moves to Friday nights.

Sunday: Only A Game moves to 7:00 a.m. The TED Radio Hour moves to 10:00 a.m. At 11:00, we welcome the environmental news magazine Living on Earth back to KSUT. Living on Earth is public radio's weekly environmental news show, covering a full range of ecological issues, and is hosted by Steve Curwood. The Splendid Table moves up to noon. At 1:00 p.m., we're proud to present a new program, Milk Street Radio.  From street food in Thailand to a bakery in a Syrian refugee camp to how one scientist uses state of the art pollen analysis to track the origins of honey (and also to solve cold murder cases), Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street Radio goes anywhere and everywhere to ask questions and get answers about cooking, food, culture, wine, farming, restaurants, literature, and the lives and cultures of the people who grow, produce, and create the food we eat. At 2:00, we get into a block of music with with Folk Alley, which moves from Wednesday night. The investigative radio program Reveal follows at 4:00, and The KSUT Sunday Special stays in place at 5:00. Radiolab moves to Saturdays, Travel with Rick Steves and the Wait Wait Don't Tell Me! repeat are dropped.

These changes to our programming schedule take effect Monday October 31, when we will begin airing The Night Blend overnight, and Here & Now in the noon hour. The debut of Monday evening's World Music Lineup will be delayed a week so we can air special Halloween programming. Other changes will be noticeable the evening of Wednesday November 2.

We know that making changes in our programming requires a leap of faith – from us, and from you, the listener. We believe it's in the service of creating a better public radio station for the Four Corners. Thanks for your partnership in KSUT. Feel free to contact us at feedback@ksut.org and at 970-563-0255.
