Gill Landry's quietly affecting video for "Funeral In My Heart," the unsentimental elegy that opens his third, self-titled solo album (out now on ATO Records), shows the Old Crow Medicine Show member traversing faded landscapes he's discovered while driving through his home state of Louisiana on U.S. Route 65. The song itself is a sad, sweet, acoustical rumination on grief, abounding with fantastical images that Landry delivers so gently that they feel perfectly natural.
The images Landry captured in this self-directed short are like that, too – he stands before a leafless tree for so long that it starts to seem like an old friend, then strolls by empty storefronts and ball fields, a cemetery gone to seed, a church still bright with whitewash but with no visible congregation. The mood is meditative and ultimately accepting. Landry's vision of the Deep South as a place both often overlooked and strangely wide-open is perfectly rendered in only two minutes of wandering.
