Deep Sea Diver: Making The Most Of A Fresh Start

Deep Sea Diver singer Jessica Dobson took a roundabout way to get where she is now. Signed to Atlantic Records at 19, Dobson moved to New York to record her first LP, which was eventually shelved; a second recording hit the same dead end. After leaving the label, she went on to play guitar in Beck's touring band, toured with Yeah Yeah Yeahs and most recently played with The Shins.

Now based in Seattle, Jessica plays her own music as Deep Sea Diver, the band she co-leads with drummer (and husband) Peter Mansen. While Dobson moves easily between piano and electric guitar, Mansen is a whirl of energy, while bassist John Raines underlines the swells and hooks with cool, articulated bass lines.

Deep Sea Diver recently performed at Portland's Mississippi Studios as part of the opbmusic showcase during Music Fest NW. This song, "NWO" — short for "New World Order" — is a vision of two people as they walk through an apocalyptic world. The track appears on the band's debut album, 2012's History Speaks.
