A fire is burning about one mile southwest of the Animas Air Park outside of Durango and is estimated at about 10 acres.
The fire was first reported about noon, Sunday, July 22 and is burning in Pinon and Juniper on Southern Ute Indian Tribal Land. The fire is very active and is crowing and spotting, according to Ann Bond of the US Forest Service.
There are currently two crews and engines from Durango along with a Southern Ute Fire Department engine and a USFS Type III Helicopter working the fire, with an air tanker on order.

An additional two 20-person crews were on scene today to help with building fire line on the Lightner Fire, bringing the total number of personnel to 90. The fire did become more active mid-afternoon and increased an additional five acres in size to 85 acres. The helicopter has assisted firefighters throughout the day with water drops as needed. An update on containment will not be available until this evening.
Non-residents are asked not to drive down County Road 208 due to the fire traffic on the road.

As of 5:30 PM, the Lightner Fire was estimated at 60 acres. Retardant lines along the top and shoulders of Barnroof Mountain were holding well and the fire had not spread beyond the north side of Barnroof. A SEAT and two helicopters worked the fire until about 7:30 PM. There were two 20-person crews building containment line along the lower portions of the fire but no estimate of containment was available. A light rain began falling around 7:00 and the humidity level was up to 45% which should moderate fire behavior.
Durango Fire and Rescue responded to a blaze west of Durango, off Lightner Creek Road, on County Road 208 at approximately 12:15 pm Wednesday, June 27, 2012. The fire is burning on private land and the Perins Peak State Wildlife Area. The fire has burned approximately 80 acres as of about 3 p.m.
Overall activity was quiet today. Incident Operations reported some light moisture over the fire and generally cooler conditions. On the southwest perimeter, fire has begun to move west of the Davis Creek drainage into an area previously treated with prescribed burns. It remains north of the Piedra River.
Resources assigned to the Little Sand Fire assisted the San Juan National Forest with response to two very small fires caused by last night's lightning activity.
The Columbine Ranger District, 367 Pearl Street, Bayfield, Colorado, will be open this Saturday, June 30th, from 10 am to 4 pm to offer fire information and updates on closures, campgrounds, etc, in the area.
