DURANGO – October 16, 2012, 2:20 pm - Durango Interagency Fire Dispatch reports several new wildfires, apparently the result of lightning holdovers from last Friday, when the area received 9,800 ground strikes during a storm that resulted in little moisture. The most active fire at this time is the Vallecito Fire, which is estimated at 40 to 50 acres about one mile west of the southern end of Vallecito Reservoir up Jack Creek in the National Forest. The Goblin Fire in the Animas Canyon north of Durango is now estimated at 60 acres, burning on the east side of the Animas Canyon two miles south of Needleton near the confluence with Cascade Creek. DURANGO -The San Juan National Forest Columbine Ranger District has released a decision and final Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Hermosa Creek and East Fork Hermosa Creek Fish Barriers project. The decision approves installation of two fish barriers to assist in the recovery of native Colorado River cutthroat trout in the Hermosa Creek watershed.

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly today announced a $43 million financial assistance agreement for design and construction of a portion of the Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project. The leaders broke ground in June on the historic project, which, when completed, will have the capacity to deliver clean running water to a potential future population of approximately 250,000. Today’s milestone is one in a series of steps that are part of the larger Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project.
