FIRE DANGER A CONCERN FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND AND BEYOND

DURANGO - The Durango Interagency Fire Dispatch Center reports that fire danger is increasing on public lands as southwestern Colorado heads into the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Not only has this spring been relatively dry, but last fall was very dry, which has resulted in low soil moisture and vegetation at lower and middle elevations already drying out.

FireWise Offers Chipper Rental Rebate

FireWise of Southwest Colorado is offering a Chipper Rental Rebate Program for residents needing to reduce the slash from wildfire fuels mitigation on private lands in La Plata and Archuleta counties. The program will reimburse residents the lesser of $100/day or 50% of the chipper rental cost or $100/day or 50% of the cost to have a mitigation company provide the chipping services. The program is valid May 1, 2013 through September 30, 2013 or until funds are expended.

Three new board members elected in LPEA director election

DURANGO, Colo. – The La Plata Electric Association, Inc. (LPEA) board of directors will have three new faces when it convenes for its next meeting on May 15, 2013, as Mark Garcia and Jack D. Turner unseated District 1 incumbent Lindon (Lin) Stewart and District 4 incumbent Herb Brodsky, respectively, in the LPEA director elections. Michael Rendon won in District 3 over Richard Alan Yoder, to fill the seat of retiring Harry Goff.

Public Forums to be held on Wilderness Management Changes

DURANGO, Co. – Public forums will be held in Durango and Silverton in the coming weeks regarding Required Registration for the Weminuche Wilderness.  In 2014, the San Juan and Rio Grande National Forests will begin requiring recreationists to register prior to entering the Wilderness.

Chimney Rock Prescribed Burn

Fire managers with the San Juan National Forest Pagosa Ranger District plan to conduct a 90-acre prescribed burn this week at Chimney Rock National Monument 17 miles southwest of Pagosa Springs.  

Ignition is planned to begin in the late morning, March 3.  Significant rain could delay the prescribed burn to later in the week.

Fifteen years after his death and 40 years after the release of his widely beloved song 'Rocky Mountain High,' ATO Records celebrates John Denver's life and music with 'The Music Is You: A Tribute to John Denver'. The album features covers of Denver's most popular songs by a diverse group of artists including Dave Matthews, My Morning Jacket, Train, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and many others. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Wilderness Society in John's name.
